Clavell Tower

Picture
Location: On the Dorset Coast

Website: www.landmarktrust.org.uk/news/ClavellTower.htm

Age: Built in 1830

Brief History: Built by Reverend John Richards Clavell as an observatory and folly, later used as a seamark. The tower inspired a young Thomas Hardy to write his Wessex Poems, and he courted Eliza Nicholl here. The tower was gutted by fire in the 1930s. Taken over by the Landmark Trust, the tower was moved slightly inland due to coastal erosion between 2006-2008, and re-built in the process.

Date for Folly for Folly: September 2013 (exact dates tbc, likely 14th/15th September)

What?: Since the folly is a lighthouse, for the duration of the Landmark Trust's open week-end, a 'beacon' flame made of glass will be erected inside, for the public to view. Further details to follow.
